It’s always inspiring to hear about the successes of our students at The Crew Academy, and we love to hear about how the knowledge and skills gained make a real impact in their careers.

We recently caught up with Tayla, one of our superstar Purser graduates here at The Crew Academy, who recently completed her 2-week intensive online course with an incredible 99% grade average!

The Crew Academy Purser Program, which can also be taken in person or in a flexible format over 12 months, is the industry’s leading program, delivering 92% of all IAMI GUEST accredited Purser graduates. It teaches a wide range of knowledge and skills that come under the role of Purser.

We wanted to discuss her yachting journey so far and the impact our Purser Program has had in her role…

Tayla’s yachting journey

Tayla’s journey began over five years ago as a Fourth Stew where she demonstrated exceptional dedication and a thirst for knowledge, and she swiftly rose through the ranks to become a Second Stew. Her career took an exciting turn when she stepped into the Purser role during a complex yacht conversion project. Even though there was no previous Purser to guide her, Tayla decided to embrace the challenge head-on.

Recognising the evolving demands of her role, Tayla enrolled in The Crew Academy Purser program. “Enrolling was a strategic decision to equip myself with the necessary expertise for future responsibilities, particularly when the yacht is operational and hosting guests.” she explained.

What were your favourite parts of the course?

“The modules on ISM, ISPS, MLC, and STCW were absolute game-changers. These modules provided in-depth knowledge and practical insights into the regulatory frameworks and safety protocols essential for the efficient management of a superyacht.”

One of the most surprising aspects of the course for Tayla was the depth and complexity of the ISM code. “Understanding how safety management systems are implemented and maintained was eye-opening. The detailed processes involved in ensuring compliance and promoting a culture of safety onboard were much more complex and comprehensive than I initially anticipated.” she explained.

What impact has it had on your career?

“The Purser course has already had a significant impact on my role. It has enhanced my organisational skills, particularly in managing the administrative and regulatory aspects of the yacht’s operations. I’ve been able to develop and implement more efficient systems for documentation, inventory, and compliance checks. This preparation is crucial for when we transition from the shipyard to guest trip” she said.

Looking ahead, Tayla aims to solidify her position as a Purser while continuously expanding her knowledge and skills. “I aim to apply the knowledge and skills I’ve acquired to improve the yacht’s operational efficiency and ensure seamless compliance with all regulations” she shared.
