TCA – Mental Health Wellbeing and Awareness (IAMI GUEST Unit 44)

The Crew Academy's IAMI GUEST accredited Mental Health Wellbeing & Awareness course is specifically designed to equip yacht crew with a practical raft of coping mechanisms and the tools necessary to drive positive change in the industry.

Fostering a culture of positive mental health not only increases productivity on your vessel, but it also ensures that crew are able to perform at a high-level consistently and reliably. 

The primary objective of this program is to prepare and equip yacht crew and shore-based industry professionals to recognise behaviours indicative of emotional distress, encourage open communication, and deal with mental health challenges effectively and with compassion. 

This program will provide you with the skills and knowledge to look after yourself and others on board by helping you establish a common language around mental health and cultivate a sense of connectivity between your people to optimise wellbeing onboard.

Course Format

  • Blended learning delivered online via kelp.

  • 4 hours of live teaching, taken over one evening:

    • Monday - 5pm to 9pm UK time.

  • Plus an additional 9 - 10 hours of guided self-study.

Meet your trainer

Andrew Roch, brings over 25 years of industry experience to his role as our Mental Health trainer. Andrew's professional journey began in the mid-90s with a distinguished career in headhunting and provisioning before uniting his businesses under the banner of Yacht Crew Recruitment & Training (YCRT).

With a deep commitment to fostering stronger, happier, and more effective yacht crew, Andrew is a passionate advocate for positive change and a people-first approach. This commitment is clearly demonstrated by the thousands of mental health training sessions he has personally donated to crew placed by The Crew Hunter and to The Crew Academy alumni. 

Accreditation

Upon completion of the program, learners will be awarded the following certificate:

  • IAMI GUEST Unit 44 - Mental Health & Wellbeing.

Platform access

Students booking onto the Mental Health Wellbeing & Awareness program with The Crew Academy will gain immediate access to the full course content and library of resources. Students must complete all self-study and live training within the 12 month period of booking.

Course Content

Live Training Instructor Led

This program takes place over one evening, 5 to 9pm UK, the session is hosted via zoom and consists of 4 hours of live training with your course trainer Andrew.

Introduction to Mental Health (Module 1) Online Course

The purpose of this module is to equip yacht crew with essential knowledge surrounding mental health, awareness, support, and the importance of addressing stigma in the maritime environment. 


By applying these principles, you can contribute to a healthier, more supportive environment for yourself and your crew.

Causes & Triggers (Module 2) Online Course

In this module we will explore the multifaceted challenges faced by yacht crew, focusing on mental health, physical well-being, social dynamics, emotional stressors, crisis management, personal factors, environmental stressors, and cyberbullying. 


This module provides actionable strategies to address these issues and foster a supportive and healthy work environment. 


By applying these strategies, you can create a healthier, more supportive environment for yacht crew members to thrive.

Understanding Mental Health Conditions (Module 3) Online Course

This course provides a comprehensive understanding of the different kinds of mental health challenges faced by yacht crew, emphasising awareness, early intervention, and effective support. 


We thoroughly cover a range of conditions, their impacts, and practical strategies for fostering well-being and resilience in high-pressure environments. 


By applying these insights, you’ll be empowered to create a healthier, and more supportive environment for yourself and your crew.

Strategies for Wellbeing On-Board (Module 4) Online Course

This course provides practical strategies to enhance mental health and well-being, particularly for those in demanding environments like yacht work. 


We cover topics such as stress management, self-care, routines, and maintaining healthy habits. Remember, small, consistent efforts can lead to significant improvements in your mental and physical well-being.


Support and Resources for Crew (Module 5) Online Course

This course provides a comprehensive exploration of mental health resources, professional development, and effective communication strategies, particularly within the yachting and maritime industries. 


It emphasises the importance of empathy, cultural awareness, and practical tools for fostering well-being and resilience.
