The Crew Academy’s Barista & Hot Beverages eLearning course equips interior crew with skills for exceptional hot beverage service including brewing methods, latte art, tea service and more.
The course covers a range of topics, beginning with the history and global rituals of coffee, tea, and cocoa, the cultural significance of these beverages and their preparation, to provide authentic experiences for guests from a diverse range of backgrounds.
Gain an in depth knowledge of the preparation of coffee, including brewing methods, milk steaming and latte art.
The course also covers safety and hygiene practices and the proper maintenance and cleaning of equipment. Tea, herbal infusions, and cocoa are also covered with insights into flavour profiles, brewing methods, and creative presentation ideas.
Course Format

8 hours of guided eLearning through the kelp platform.

Series of multiple-choice knowledge checks throughout the course.

Practical assessments throughout.

Online examination (30 multiple choice or short answer questions, 1 hour).
Equipment Required
- Good internet, computer and printer
- Device with video capabilities
- A coffee maker (Ideally a barista or capsule machine, however a French press, Moka pot, drip machine etc. will suffice)
- Milk frother (handheld or automatic)
- Milk jug
- Mug
- Ground coffee and milk

After completing the course, you will officially be part of our Alumni community and will have free access to our Mental Health courses as well as discounts on other courses.
Platform access
Students booking onto the Barista and Hot Beverage program with The Crew Academy will gain immediate access to the full course content and library of resources. Students must complete all self-study and live training within the 12 month period of booking.

Please note:
Students must possess good knowledge of verbal and written English to successfully complete this program.
Students must have some formal basic training and / or 1 season of onboard experience.
Students must have a good working knowledge of onboard SOPs and administration.
Students must be at least 18 years old.
Throughout the duration of this course, students will study the following modules:

Health and safety procedures
Use of coffee-making equipment
Coffee presentation and service
Milk frothing tools and techniques
Tea rituals and service
Hot chocolate, cocoa and drinking chocolate
