TCA – Purser Residential – Live Out (IAMI GUEST Units 18-21)

Before you start your pre-course reading, you will need to upload the following documents to confirm your eligibility for the course before enrolment.

• CV (Demonstrating management experience within the maritime sector or yacht experience in a senior/HoD position).

Please note:

• You MUST have a good knowledge of verbal and written English to successfully complete the program. If English is not your first language, you may need to complete the Maritime English for Seafarer's test (marlins.co.uk) to assess your proficiency. 

• You MUST already have a good working knowledge of computers and mathematical calculations.

• You should be at least 25 years old, younger applicants must meet specific entry requirements.

Welcome to the Purser program. 

Before you arrive at our training facility, please familiarise yourself with kelp. our online learning platform. Please also take some time to read through the pre-course material which you will find below.

Throughout each module, you will find additional tasks to complete as you make your way through. This will include core module readings, reflective writing to capture your thoughts on specific areas of the module and learning how to complete a basic set of charter accounts using Microsoft Office.

You may be asked to share and discuss these completed tasks in the live sessions with your course tutor, enhancing your presentation skills.

Please complete the Initial Course Survey in order to gain access to the Purser Course material.

Upon completion of this survey, all course material will become available to you.

Training takes place daily, excluding weekends, for the duration of your stay. Sessions will run from 9am to 6pm, with regular breaks, and an hour for lunch each day at 12pm, followed by dinner.

Students will also be expected to complete 3 hours of self or group study each day in order to complete the self-study portions of the program, and to complete their homework.

During the weekend, you will have time to explore the beautiful city of Andratx, any local attractions, dine at nearby restaurants, and enjoy the beautiful surrounding countryside.

In this self-study module you will be looking at your role as a manager and leader in motivating and engaging staff; how to successfully manage your team in a way that will involve and inspire them. 

In this section of the program, you are provided with a variety of resources for you to read.

This includes:

• Leadership and management theories and how to flex your management style.

• How to identify your preferred management style and its impact on your team.

• How to reflect on your role and responsibilities as a manager as well as identifying any areas for improvement in order to ensure the effectiveness of your teams.

• Tools and techniques to manage yourself, what motivates you and how to self develop.

• The characteristics of an effective team and the tools to effectively manage, support, motivate and develop your team.

• The principles of effective communication and giving feedback for high performance.

In this module, we will learn about the role of a Purser.

Study units include:

• The day-to-day duties of a Purse

• Who the Purser is responsible for

• Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)

• Preparing for port bookings

• The types of manuals, procedures and documents you will need to create or update

• Yacht certifications, publications and subscriptions

• Yachting software to familiarise yourself with

In this module, we will learn about Port Clearances.

Study units include:

• What the port clearance involves and when it is needed

• Yacht certificates & documents

• Immigration regulations and procedures

• Customs regulations and procedures

• Document authorisation

• We will also introduce you to Port State Control, MoUs and their role in the maritime industry.

In this module, we will look at the operational aspect of the role of the Purser and safety onboard.

Study units include:

• Yacht Operations; Emergency Numbers, MARPOL, Cultural Traditions, Crew Safety, Provisioning

• Purser’s Muster Duties

• Guest Safety Induction

• Yacht Specific Operations; PWC Operations, Diving Operations, Stowaways

In this module, we will look at how to research and share key destination knowledge with guests.

Study units include:

• Research and Reconnaissance

• Presenting Information to Guests 

• Crew Internal Communications

• Guest Relations

• Event Planning

This module is divided into two sections, with the first section covering all aspects of Charter.

Study units include:

• The charter process and the parties involved

• The different Charter seasons

• Types of Charter agreements 

• Handling complaints

• Managing Charter Accounts / APA 

• Types of Charter clients

The second section covers Value Added Tax or as it is more commonly known as VAT.

Study units include:

• What is VAT?

• How VAT is applied in the EU

• VAT and Charter

• Non-EU Commercial Yachts in the VAT system & Free Circulation

• Non-EU Private Yachts in the VAT system (Temporary Admission & Inward Processing Relief)

• Union Customs Code

This module is divided into two parts and in the first part of this module, we will be exploring Accounting.

Study units include:

• Management Expectations

• Basic Accounting Principles and Definitions

• Bookkeeping

• Cash Accounts

• Float and Credit Card Management

• The Purchase Procedure

• Accounting Controls and Audits

The second part of this module is to be completed as self-study and will introduce you to Budgeting.

Study units include:

• Financial budgeting vs Management

• Past actions to forecast future spending and decision making.

• Decision Making

• Functions of Management Accounting

• Cost Definitions

• Objective of Budgeting

• Making the budget tell a story

In this module, we will focus on the maritime organisation's legal frameworks and their application to vessel operations and Crew.

Study units include:

• The Maritime Legal Organisation

• United Nations

• International Maritime Organisation (MARPOL, STCW, & SOLAS)

• International Labour Organisation (MLC 2006)

• UNLCOS

• Flag State

• Port State & Port State Control

In this Module, we go into the different maritime conventions and codes and how to tie this into Crew Management.

Study units include:

• STCW

• MLC

• SOLAS - ISM & ISPS

• Payroll

• POEA

• Crew Management

• Video tutorials for Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint are available.
• To pass, all assignment requirements must be fulfilled.
• All assignments are graded as PASS or FAIL.
