TCA – Yacht Owner’s Representative Program (GUEST Unit 40)

The Crew Academy’s IAMI GUEST accredited YOR Role and Responsibilities program (YORP Unit 40), delivers the detailed mapping and complexities of the various roles and responsibilities of a yacht owner representative.

Participants will learn how to establish the owner's project aims, goals, present the requirements to the shipyard, and negotiate project objectives on behalf of the owner.

It is directed at all existing and aspiring owner’s representatives, project managers, captains, officers and contractors working in any shipyard on behalf of a yacht owner.

The course is delivered 100% online via kelp. in collaboration with a mix of interactive masterclasses and self study.

Course Format

  • Held over 3 weeks online via Zoom

  • Delivered online via kelp. 

  • 6 live sessions, held on Monday & Wednesday, 5 to 8pm UK.

  • 3 written assessments to complete.

  • One practical assessment to complete.

  • 12.5 hours of guided self-study through kelp.

Meet your trainer - 

Chanine Mierop, our Leadership trainer here at The Crew Academy, brings an abundance of experience to her with a Bachelor and Master’s degree in ‘Cross Cultural Management’and a former career in Recruitment & Human Resources where she led multi-functional teams for around seven years.

Chanine then transferred the skills she learned after working in the corporate and high-end hospitality fields, to the yachting industry where she successfully managed and trained various teams in the role of HoD and Purser for nine years. Her passion is to build the best team with an emphasis on communication and personal development.

Accreditation

Upon completion of the program, learners will be awarded the following certificate:

  • IAMI GUEST YORP Unit 40 - Role and Responsibility Skills.

  • If you wish to complete the full program, you will also need to complete Units 41-43.

  • Once the full program is completed, you will be eligible to join the Superyacht Alliance OR Registry.

Yacht Owner's Representative Register

Once qualified, participants will have the opportunity to apply for the Yacht Owner's Representative Register, a SYBAss initiative which aims to elevate industry standards and connect qualified Owner's Representatives with potential clients.

Platform Access

Students booking onto the Yacht Owner’s Representative Program with The Crew Academy will gain immediate access to the full course content and library of resources. Students must complete all self-study and live training within the 12 month period of booking.

Course Content

Live Instructor-Led Training Sessions Instructor Led

Training takes place over 3 weeks. Consisting of 6 live lectures delivered by your trainer Chanine, over Zoom each week .


Sessions will run on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 5pm to 8pm UK time.


Students will also be expected to complete an additional 12 hours of guided self-study in order to complete the self-study portions of the program, and to complete their homework.

YORP Introductory Information Online Course

All sessions are recorded so you can catch up later if you can't make a particular session but we recommend joining as many sessions live as possible.


We understand that working onboard a yacht involves an unpredictable schedule. So, if you need to pause your training, we can transfer you to a different cohort throughout the year, if needed.


Following the end of the course, we support all of our graduates to progress their career through our in-house talent management team at The Crew Hunter.


You will also join our alumni network of professionals who have completed the YORP to help build more industry connections.

Please note - to succeed in this intensive and fast-paced program:

  • Students MUST possess professional working-level English skills. If English is not your first language, you may need to complete the Maritime English for Seafarer's test. To assess your proficiency, you can practice this test at marlins.co.uk.

  • Students should be at least 25 years old, younger applicants must meet specific entry requirements.

The Role of an OR and Stakeholder Communication (Module 1) Online Course

The focus of this unit is to understand the Yacht Owner’s Representative’s identity, authority, and communication landscape.

Study units include:

  • Defining what a Yacht Owner’s Representative is and is not.

  • Navigating authority, contractual limits, and delegated decision-making.

  • Identifying and managing key project stakeholders.

  • Using stakeholder maps, communication models, and the RACI matrix to clarify roles.

  • Applying professional communication strategies across formal and informal channels.

During this module, you will gain clarity on your professional identity as an Owner’s Representative, how to communicate with authority effectively, and how to build strong working relationships across shipyards, designers, and owner-side teams.

Owner Decisions, Goals, and Ethics (Module 2) Online Course

This module focuses on the core responsibility of an Owner’s Representative -  to act as a trusted, ethical advisor, and guiding the owner through the process of defining and protecting their vision.

Study units include:

  • Capturing and clarifying the owner’s goals through structured discovery and questioning.

  • Translating intent into a clear, strategic brief for the use of the design and shipyard teams.

  • Aligning multiple stakeholders around the owner’s priorities and values.

  • Managing decision flow using tools like the Owner’s Decision List (ODL) and prioritisation models.

  • Applying ethical frameworks to navigate conflicts of interest, unclear direction, and pressure.

  • Building and sustaining trust through transparency, professionalism, and discretion.

Outcome:

During this module, you will gain the skills and confidence to guide owner-side decision-making, protect integrity under pressure, and strengthen credibility across all project relationships.

Conflict Management, Escalation, Dispute Resolution & Cultural Intelligence (Module 3) Online Course

In this unit we focus on developing the communication and leadership skills necessary to manage conflict, maintain professionalism, and bridge cultural differences in global projects.

Study units include:

  • Recognising early warning signs of conflict and preventing escalation.

  • Distinguishing operational issues from structural disputes and escalating effectively.

  • Understanding formal dispute resolution mechanisms (DRB, mediation, arbitration, litigation).

  • Leading neutrally during disputes, using emotional intelligence and structured dialogue.

  • Using cultural awareness to interpret cues, build trust, and prevent misunderstandings.

This module will equip Yacht Owner's Representative’s with the necessary skills needed to handle high-pressure situations and protect the owner's interests in complex, multinational environments.

Advanced Leadership Module Online Course

In this module we explore the topic management and leadership, clarifying their distinct yet interconnected roles and highlighting the importance of adaptability in various contexts. 

We will also discuss key leadership theories, styles, and practical applications to enhance your overall effectiveness as a leader.


By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • Analyse and understand the impact a leader has on individuals and the overall team dynamic.

  • Identify and differentiate between various different leadership styles.
