The Crew Academy’s IAMI GUEST accredited Command Mental Health Awareness course is specifically designed to equip leaders in yachting with the awareness to drive positive change.
Senior Leaders onboard are often only able to deal with the “urgent” and not always able to deal with the “important” as owners, guests and crew vie for their limited time.
They recognise that positive mental health is a key-contributor to an efficient, happy, and productive boat and they want to be able to help and support their crew and prolong their careers on their vessels.
However, being able to do this without having the knowledge nor the toolbox to do so, means this ‘important’ and much needed part of their leadership role remains a challenge.

The purpose of this module is to give you a better understanding of mental fitness and resilience, and you will be introduced to some frameworks to help you create a happier, healthier, and more sustainable work culture on board your vessel.
During this module you will explore the relationship between performance and wellbeing, helping you to identify opportunities to invest in your wellbeing through mental fitness and building resilience, and how best to take those opportunities.
The knowledge and skills that you will develop throughout all of these modules will help you to understand 'emotional interference' in more detail, generate insight as to how you can better relate to any challenges, generate more influence and control in your life and better navigate the leadership pressures in yachting.
In this module we will explore the impact that stress and pressure can have and does have in our working life, and what we can do to better mitigate and reduce those impacts.
Among other benefits, learning to reduce the impact of stress and pressure upon us will create more cognitive space, reduce the level of physiological reaction we experience and improve our sense of wellbeing, all building a greater level of influence and control.
In this module, we will look at identifying and supporting workplace stress, whilst exploring the link between personal well-being and being a resilient leader because in order to effectively lead others, we must first be able to look after ourselves.
During this module, we invite you to explore stress management from a personal perspective first. This methodology ensures that any strategy you later implement for your team is built upon a foundation of awareness, understanding, and authenticity.
We ourselves should feel psychologically safe and so there is a requirement for our employers to create the conditions for this. But this may be lacking, and as leaders squeezed in the centre we may have to assume responsibility for the action we must take to meet our emotional needs and accept the situation as less than ideal.
In this module we will explore psychological safety, what it is and also the three types of action in more detail - the shielding, sensing and supporting actions. Once we are clear on what we need and what action to take as leaders and individuals we will explore our role as managers and what others need from us.
In this course, we will examine how important it is that we develop positive habitual behaviours that will allow us to build upon our resilient mindset, without having to necessarily make great conscious efforts to do so.
Within this module we will equip participants with the skills to adapt their communication styles, foster trust, and create a positive work environment.
It emphasises the importance of meaningful conversations, active listening, and emotional awareness to support team wellbeing and resilience.
